The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Deputy Minister Waleed Alkhereiji met with Tsukasa Uemura to review the state of bilateral relations between the Kingdom and Japan. The two officials discussed the latest developments on regional and international fronts along with ongoing efforts aimed at addressing them. The meeting took place in the Japanese capital. It was attended by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ Ambassador to Japan, Dr. Ghazi bin Faisal bin Zaqr.

According to records from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Uemura has served as Special Envoy for Middle East Peace since at least 2024 and has engaged with various regional stakeholders on the situation surrounding Israel and Palestine. In a July 2025 international conference, the Japanese envoy expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Uemura also held talks on that occasion with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa to discuss Japan-Palestine cooperation.

A statement from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the June 2026 memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran while stressing the importance of swiftly reestablishing free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This development forms part of the broader regional context that the Saudi and Japanese officials addressed during their July 27 meeting. Saudi diplomatic efforts have similarly prioritized de-escalation and political solutions across multiple fronts.

The Diplomat magazine has described the Japan-Saudi relationship as one that builds on strong cultural and economic ties in recent years. Uemura previously served as Japan’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, a role in which he highlighted opportunities for closer bilateral cooperation. That experience contributed to the foundation for the discussions held in Tokyo.

Al Arabiya English reported that Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has stressed the importance of reaching a solid nuclear agreement with Iran that includes robust safeguards and durable verification mechanisms. Such an agreement would provide confidence to the international community and countries in the region that the issue could be resolved. The deputy minister’s meeting with the Japanese envoy aligns with this pattern of Saudi engagement on international developments.

Earlier dispatches from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the special envoy has met with Gulf Cooperation Council member states to exchange views on Middle East peace. These interactions have covered a range of issues including stability in the region. The July 27 talks built upon that ongoing diplomatic coordination between the two countries.
