US Treasury Department data released this month showed Saudi Arabia increased its holdings of US Treasury securities by $2.2 billion during June 2026 to a total of $142.5 billion. The kingdom held $140.3 billion at the end of May and $140.1 billion in April, according to the department’s Treasury International Capital system. That performance kept Saudi Arabia in 17th place among the largest foreign holders of US government debt.

The department’s breakdown placed $108.6 billion of the June total in long-term securities, accounting for 76 percent of Saudi Arabia’s portfolio. The remaining $34 billion, or 24 percent, consisted of short-term holdings. These proportions illustrate the mix of maturities the kingdom maintains in its US debt investments.

Japan remained the top foreign holder with $1.116 trillion in June even after a 2.3 percent decline from the previous month, the US Treasury Department reported. The United Kingdom followed at $939.9 billion after a 1 percent drop while China’s position fell 4 percent to $633.4 billion, the lowest level recorded since September 2008. Overall foreign holdings of US Treasuries slipped to $9.299 trillion in June from $9.371 trillion in May though the total stood 2.3 percent higher than a year earlier.

Treasury records show Saudi Arabia’s holdings fluctuated through the first half of 2026, reaching $152 billion in March and $160.4 billion in February before easing in subsequent months. The latest monthly gain reversed part of that downward movement from earlier in the year. The department compiles these monthly updates from custodial and transaction reports submitted by global investors.

Among Middle East economies Saudi Arabia outranked the United Arab Emirates, whose holdings stood at $118.6 billion at the end of June, the US Treasury Department assessment found. Brazil held $168.9 billion to rank ahead of the kingdom while South Korea reported $132.3 billion immediately behind it. The data underscore Saudi Arabia’s leading position within the Gulf Cooperation Council for US Treasury exposure.

The department’s June snapshot captured a period when several major holders adjusted their positions amid broader movements in international reserves and currency management. Saudi Arabia’s portfolio forms part of the kingdom’s foreign asset diversification that has been tracked consistently through the Treasury International Capital system for more than a decade. Subsequent releases will provide further detail on July developments and any valuation adjustments.
