The Saudi Press Agency reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Kyriakos Mitsotakis reviewed the longstanding and distinguished relations between Saudi Arabia and Greece. The two sides considered concrete steps to support and expand cooperation in several fields during the Tuesday conversation. Officials indicated the discussion also encompassed various regional and international matters of mutual concern to both countries.

A framework for deeper engagement took shape after the two governments signed a memorandum of understanding in 2021 to create the Saudi-Greek Strategic Partnership Council according to records from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This agreement paved the way for regular high-level contacts including reciprocal visits that have broadened dialogue on economic and security questions. The council has served as the primary vehicle for aligning policies between Riyadh and Athens since its launch.

The first meeting of the Greece-Saudi Arabia High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council took place in Al Ula in January 2025 with the Crown Prince and Mitsotakis jointly chairing the session a Greek Reporter account of the gathering stated. Participants endorsed 46 separate initiatives that covered defense investment trade energy tourism and cultural exchanges. Both delegations presented the council as an instrument to raise bilateral engagement to a strategic level.

Agreements sealed during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s 2022 visit to Athens carried a total value of approximately 14 billion Saudi riyals according to the joint closing statement issued by the two sides at the time. Those pacts focused on renewable energy infrastructure maritime transport logistics communications healthcare and food security. Implementation of the deals has contributed to measurable increases in two-way commerce and joint projects over the ensuing years.

Mitsotakis previously thanked Saudi authorities for their assistance in safeguarding Greek nationals in the Kingdom during a March 2026 telephone conversation the Greek Prime Minister’s Office documented. That earlier call also addressed developments in Iran and the wider Middle East with both leaders stressing the need to prevent further escalation. The latest exchange builds on that pattern of frequent communication between the two capitals.

Greece has emerged as an important European partner for Saudi Arabia in efforts to diversify energy sources and strengthen Mediterranean security links a pattern visible across multiple joint communiques. Saudi officials have welcomed Greek participation in regional forums that address supply-chain resilience and investment opportunities. Continued dialogue at the leadership level is expected to produce additional agreements in the sectors already targeted by the strategic council.
