The Saudi-led coalition announced that Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca at 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday before it could breach restricted airspace around the holy city. Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, the coalition’s official spokesperson, issued the statement through the Saudi Press Agency on Wednesday detailing the interception. He characterized the drone as a hostile threat launched by the terrorist Houthi militia with the intent to terrorize pilgrims and provoke millions of Muslims globally. The event represents an escalation in the Yemen conflict that has seen renewed Houthi attacks across Saudi territory in recent days.

Al-Maliki declared that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and the pilgrims is a red line. He added, “The security of the Two Holy Mosques and the pilgrims is a red line, and the Joint Forces Command of the Coalition will not hesitate to take the necessary and deterrent measures against the Terrorist Houthi Militia and its hostile and terrorist behavior.” The remarks underscore Saudi determination to protect the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, which draws millions for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Houthi officials categorically denied aiming any attack at Mecca or other holy sites in Saudi Arabia. Military spokesman Yahya Sarea stated that Houthi operations target only military and economic installations and pose no danger to sacred locations. The group claimed its recent strikes were in response to a series of Saudi airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen. Sarea further asserted that his forces had shot down a Saudi fighter jet although Riyadh has offered no confirmation of such a loss.

Saudi authorities activated and then quickly lifted security alerts in Mecca, Taif and Jeddah following the drone incident. Saudi government data places the number of international pilgrims who performed Hajj in Mecca this year at more than 1.7 million. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation issued a condemnation of the alleged attack on holy sites as a heinous and intolerable act.

The latest confrontation builds upon a week of Houthi ballistic missile and drone assaults that injured at least 13 civilians in southern Saudi cities according to official tallies. Houthi advances have given the group control over key Red Sea shipping lanes including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Coalition forces have responded with intensified airstrikes in the renewed phase of a war that began with Saudi intervention in 2015. Al-Maliki noted that this drone attempt was the first direct threat to Mecca since the 2017 missile launch.

The holy city’s unique religious significance has made any threat to it a unifying issue across the Muslim world. Previous periods of calm in the Yemen conflict had reduced direct cross-border attacks until the recent surge in hostilities. Diplomats have expressed concern that the incident could further destabilize an already volatile regional security environment involving multiple conflict arenas.
