The General Directorate of Civil Defense announced that its teams responded to an incident in Ahad Rafidah Governorate on October 2, 2026, after shrapnel from an intercepted Houthi ballistic missile caused an injury and property damage in the southern Saudi region. The falling fragments injured an Asian expatriate resident and inflicted material harm on a prayer room within a building in addition to several civilian vehicles in the vicinity. Emergency response protocols were activated immediately with personnel providing medical aid to the victim while assessing and securing the site.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, which disseminated the Civil Defense statement, the missile had been launched by the Houthi militia before Saudi air defense units successfully destroyed it in mid-air. The directorate released images depicting the aftermath including perforations in the prayer room ceiling and scattered wreckage across prayer mats as well as impacted car roofs and bodies. No further details on the expatriate’s condition were disclosed in the initial report from the authorities.

A separate Houthi projectile impacted a school facility in Najran on the same day leading to material damage without any injuries the General Directorate of Civil Defense also reported. Response teams arrived promptly at that location to carry out necessary safety inspections and mitigation steps in line with established procedures for such events. The concurrence of these two episodes on October 2 highlighted the multi-pronged nature of the threats faced by southern provinces.

Coalition forces spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki stated that air defenses had intercepted three ballistic missiles aimed at Khamis Mushait in Asir as well as four associated drones launched by the Houthis on Friday. The spokesperson detailed the defensive successes in comments that emphasized the coalition’s commitment to countering aggression from the militia. This interception over Ahad Rafidah formed one element of the larger series of defensive actions taken that day.

The incident occurs against a backdrop of intensified Houthi attacks on Saudi territory. Reuters reported in September 2026 that Saudi forces intercepted six ballistic missiles targeting Taif and Yanbu in one day alone while the Houthis claimed strikes on Riyadh and Aramco facilities. BBC News Arabic figures show more than 70 civilians injured in a wave of drone and missile strikes on southern Saudi cities including Abha and Jazan during early September escalations.
