The Madinah Region Development Authority is advancing urban development projects in the area surrounding the Prophet’s Mosque. According to the Saudi Press Agency, the initiatives include development of more than 41,000 square meters of sidewalks, planting over 6,200 trees and construction of more than 3,000 meters of pathways. These upgrades seek to improve accessibility and the overall environment for the large numbers of pilgrims and visitors to the site. The authority has pursued such work to modernize infrastructure while maintaining the historical context of the central Madinah zone.
The Madinah Region Development Authority implemented 16 initiatives in 2024 as part of the Pilgrim Experience Program, the Saudi Press Agency reported on July 21, 2025. Those steps aimed to facilitate and enhance the Hajj and Umrah journeys for participants. The current sidewalk and landscaping projects extend that earlier work by addressing physical improvements around the mosque itself. Separate Saudi Press Agency coverage noted that development projects have expanded mosque facilities and transformed the site into a broader cultural and religious destination.
The Rua Al Madinah Project near the Prophet’s Mosque features an extensive tunnel network along with luxury hospitality developments, according to an April 2025 Saudi Press Agency dispatch. That endeavor has sought to strengthen Madinah’s standing as a leading destination for religious tourism. Related efforts have included restoration of more than 100 historical Islamic sites by 2025, Arab News reported on July 25, 2025.
Upgrades under the historic sites restoration have incorporated pedestrian facilities around locations such as the Miqat of Dhu Al-Hulaifa, Arab News added. The restorations span elements from 14 centuries of development history connected to the Prophet’s Mosque and Quba Mosque. Such projects complement the authority’s sidewalk expansions by creating a more integrated visitor experience across the region.
The authority launched a guidance system in the central area to assist pilgrims and visitors with navigation around the Prophet’s Mosque, a June 2025 Saudi Press Agency report stated. It has also introduced shuttle bus services at multiple stations during Ramadan to ease movement between the Prophet’s Mosque and Quba Mosque. Those services focus on reducing congestion and ensuring organized, safe transport during periods of high attendance.
