The Saudi Press Agency reported that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman dispatched separate cables to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to mark his assumption of the presidency. In the messages the Saudi leaders wished the new president every success while expressing hopes for the continued progress and prosperity of Bangladesh and its people. The congratulations arrived three days after the swearing-in ceremony that installed the veteran politician at the helm of state affairs.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took the constitutional oath on August 21 at a formal event held in the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, according to reports carried by Prothom Alo. Acting Speaker of Parliament Kayser Kamal administered the oath to the 78-year-old Bangladesh Nationalist Party stalwart in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, opposition figures, cabinet members and senior military officials. The ceremony concluded with Alamgir signing the official document that was then authenticated by the acting speaker.

Parliament had elected Alamgir the previous day by a vote of 255 to 88 over rival candidate Oli Ahmed, Al Jazeera reported. The ballot represented the first contested presidential poll in 35 years and followed the early resignation of predecessor Mohammed Shahabuddin on health grounds after the major political transition that brought the BNP back to power. Alamgir, who previously served as local government minister, defeated the candidate backed by a Jamaat-e-Islami-led opposition alliance.

The Bangladeshi presidency remains largely ceremonial yet carries the formal titles of head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, multiple regional outlets noted. Executive authority continues to rest with the prime minister and cabinet in the nation of roughly 173 million people. Alamgir’s elevation caps a career that included long service as BNP secretary general and key roles during earlier periods of party governance.

Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh share longstanding diplomatic ties established in 1975-76 that have expanded into substantial economic and labour cooperation, according to Wikipedia entries drawing on official records. More than 3.5 million Bangladeshi workers reside in the Kingdom, sending home remittances that exceeded $5 billion annually, Arab News data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Manpower shows. The Saudi ambassador to Dhaka has highlighted plans to raise bilateral trade from $1.2 billion in 2024 toward a $3 billion target by 2030.

Fertilizers and petrochemical products dominate Saudi exports to Bangladesh while garments and textiles lead imports in the other direction, Observatory of Economic Complexity figures indicate. Both countries coordinate closely within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and have collaborated on issues ranging from labour mobility to humanitarian support for Rohingya refugees. Congratulatory messages from India, China and Oman have similarly underscored broad international recognition of the new Bangladeshi leadership.
