The Saudi Press Agency issued a periodical briefing on March 16, 2026 that outlined several national milestones as the Kingdom entered the month, beginning with the Saudi Cabinet’s formal designation of 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence to accelerate the country’s position as a global hub for data and advanced technologies. The declaration aligns with broader objectives under Saudi Vision 2030 and includes an approved investment pipeline valued at $9.1 billion to support related infrastructure and capabilities. A subsequent strategy analysis indicated that the AI sector is targeted to contribute more than 74 billion riyals to the national economy while the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority issued a commemorative postage stamp in partnership with Saudi Post to mark the initiative.

Saudi inventors and students achieved multiple international distinctions around the same period, according to details carried in the briefing. Al-Jawhara Al-Qahtani became the first Saudi winner of the global Grand Prize for general education through her AI-powered medical platform PulMind. The energy sector secured two special awards and 26 medals at the 2026 International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva while Saudi students claimed 12 special awards at the Regeneron ISEF 2026 competition in Phoenix against more than 1,700 participants from 70 countries.

The briefing placed particular emphasis on progress in the mining sector as reforms continue under Vision 2030. The Fraser Institute’s Annual Survey of Mining Companies 2025 ranked Saudi Arabia 10th in its Investment Attractiveness Index out of 68 jurisdictions surveyed worldwide. The Canadian policy think-tank reported that the Kingdom’s score rose by more than 10 points from the prior year, representing a 13-position improvement from 23rd place.

Officials have tied the mining ranking gains to updated policies that enhance both geologic assessment and regulatory frameworks designed to attract greater exploration investment. The survey evaluates jurisdictions on the basis of mineral potential combined with government approaches that either encourage or discourage industry activity. Saudi Arabia’s advance placed it alongside leading territories including Nevada, Botswana and several Canadian provinces in the top tier.

The AI designation further incorporates the launch of HUMAIN to drive intellectual property creation and product development in the field with a mandate focused on long-term leadership. Government procurement preferences now favor certified AI-integrated vendors across ministries following the Cabinet decision. These steps build on prior SDAIA efforts to embed artificial intelligence across economic sectors since 2019.

Additional context from the Fraser Institute survey highlighted that four Canadian jurisdictions appeared in the top 10 alongside the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia entries, confirming broad global competition for mining capital. Saudi Arabia’s improved policy perception contributed directly to its higher standing according to the report released in late February 2026. The briefing presented the developments as interconnected elements of the Kingdom’s ongoing economic diversification drive.
