The Saudi Press Agency reported that the General Directorate of Passports has begun using electric scooters for its personnel at the King Fahd Causeway crossing in the Eastern Province. The directorate said the deployment aims to facilitate the movement of officers across the facility while improving the quality of services provided to travelers. The scooters will also assist older travelers and people with disabilities in completing their procedures.

According to the directorate’s announcement, the electric vehicles help streamline border procedures and boost operational efficiency for staff managing daily crossings. The General Directorate of Passports operates the passport functions at the causeway, which serves as the main land connection between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The move reflects adaptations to handle sustained high traffic at the site.

General Authority for Statistics figures in the Road Transport Statistics 2024 showed that the total number of arriving and departing passengers through Saudi land ports exceeded 65.9 million that year. The authority’s data placed the King Fahd Causeway first among land ports with 49.9 percent of total passenger movement, followed by Al-Khafji Port at 11.6 percent. January recorded the highest monthly share of land passenger traffic at 10.1 percent.

Previous transport reports documented a single-day record of 136,498 passengers crossing the causeway on March 4, 2023. The General Authority for Statistics noted that arriving passengers accounted for 50.3 percent of the 2024 land total while departing passengers made up 49.7 percent. Such volumes have required ongoing adjustments in staffing and equipment at the border facility.

The directorate indicated that the scooters enable personnel to cover distances at the causeway more effectively during operations. This deployment forms part of efforts to maintain service standards amid consistent demand at the crossing, which earlier assessments estimated has seen passenger numbers grow by around 7 percent annually in recent years. The King Fahd Causeway Authority oversees overall operations of the 25-kilometer link financed by Saudi Arabia.
