The Saudi Press Agency reported that Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman witnessed the oath-taking on behalf of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud during a ceremony in Jeddah on Tuesday. Al-Shehail was among eight newly appointed ambassadors who assumed their roles in a single session that also included envoys to Pakistan, Senegal, Syria, Colombia, Belgium, Niger and Denmark. The agency listed the appointments in sequence, underscoring the breadth of Saudi diplomatic representation across multiple regions.
Al-Shehail enters the position with a diplomatic record that dates back more than 15 years at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Child Rights Information Network archives from 2010 show that she was elected to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child after a two-year competitive process involving interviews, priority evaluations and debates on expertise in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In that role she examined how national governments implemented the treaty and aligned domestic laws with its protections for children up to age 18.
A 2010 report by Arab News quoted the then-second secretary at Saudi Arabia’s UN mission in New York as telling a panel that registered businesswomen in the kingdom had reached 40,000 in 2009, a 70 percent increase from 2007. The diplomat also described government directives requiring special sections for women in departments that serve them. In a contemporaneous interview with the Child Rights Information Network, Al-Shehail stated, “I am also proud to be my country’s first female diplomat.”
She holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in political science with a specialization in international relations, according to biographical details released with her appointment. Al-Shehail completed a fellowship in international human rights law at New York University School of Law before advancing through successive diplomatic ranks. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs promoted her to the rank of minister plenipotentiary in 2023.
Throughout her career Al-Shehail has focused on humanitarian diplomacy and coordination with international partners. She has led Saudi delegations in joint working groups formed with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to address responses to global crises. These assignments involved detailed planning of assistance delivery and policy alignment on emergency relief, according to ministry records referenced in recent coverage of her record.
The appointment reflects continued emphasis on experienced diplomats with multilateral backgrounds at a time when Saudi Arabia maintains active engagement across European and Nordic capitals. Al-Shehail’s prior work at the UN mission in New York spanned four years by 2010, during which she represented the kingdom on children’s rights and broader social issues. Her swearing-in comes weeks after other senior diplomatic transitions that have placed career professionals in key bilateral posts.
