Ministry officials stated that the defect may cause the inflator to rupture upon deployment, sending metal fragments toward vehicle occupants. The Saudi Ministry of Commerce has instructed all relevant parties to address the issue through free repairs at authorized facilities. General Motors, Aljomaih Automotive Company and Universal Motors Agencies will handle the replacements without charge to vehicle owners.
This latest action continues a pattern of vehicle safety interventions by the Saudi Ministry of Commerce, which recalled 5,309 Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac models in July 2025 for related airbag faults according to the ministry’s own records. The authority maintains an active monitoring program for automotive defects in the local market to safeguard consumers. General Motors has encountered repeated airbag-related issues in its global fleet over the past decade. A 2016 campaign by the company addressed defects linked to at least one death and several injuries across millions of vehicles in the United States, a NBC News report from that period detailed. Additional recalls followed in 2023, when the automaker called back nearly one million crossovers for potential airbag failures as Car and Driver noted at the time.
