The National Center for Meteorology placed several areas under red alert for heavy rain as moderate to heavy thunderstorms swept across western and southern Saudi Arabia on August 27, 2026. According to the center’s forecast, downpours in regions including Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, Makkah and Madinah were expected to trigger flash floods accompanied by hail and strong winds that stir up dust and sand. The weather authority specified red warnings for Taif, Al Kamil and Adham in the Makkah region where the most severe conditions were anticipated. Orange alerts covered moderate rain in districts such as Al Ais, Al Mahd and Badr in Madinah while yellow alerts applied to lighter precipitation and blowing dust in Rabigh, Jeddah and Al Khurmah.

In its daily assessment the National Center for Meteorology noted that the thunderstorms carried risks of reduced visibility nearing zero in some locations along with potential for lightning strikes. The center’s data indicated that seasonal cumulonimbus cloud activity was driving the system across the western highlands with impacts extending into open highways and mountainous terrain. Separate alerts from the same authority highlighted the possibility of fog forming in higher elevations of Asir as the system evolved. These warnings came amid a pattern of unstable weather that regional authorities have tracked through the summer months.

The General Directorate of Civil Defence responded to the National Center for Meteorology alerts by issuing urgent safety directives to residents in affected zones. Civil defence officials advised against travel in valleys or low-lying areas susceptible to sudden flooding while recommending reduced vehicle speeds during periods of poor visibility. The directorate further cautioned the public to stay clear of water channels and to monitor updates from official sources as conditions developed. Such measures align with procedures activated during previous rainfall events that impacted urban centers including Jeddah.

Arab News reported that comparable heavy rainfall had struck Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah in the days immediately prior, producing floods in low-lying districts and prompting similar civil defence interventions. The National Center for Meteorology had documented moderate to heavy accumulations in those areas with accompanying hail in parts of the capital earlier in the week. Those episodes underscored the rapid transitions between extreme heat and convective storms that characterize late-summer weather across the Kingdom. Authorities continue to emphasize preparedness as forecasts indicate the potential for additional activity in coming days.

Temperatures remained elevated even as the storms approached, with the National Center for Meteorology projecting a high of 47 degrees Celsius in Dammam and readings near 45 degrees in Riyadh, Madinah and Buraidah. The combination of heat and humidity in coastal and southern provinces was expected to intensify the discomfort associated with thunderstorm outflows. Inland desert areas faced added risks from dust raised by pre-storm winds according to the center’s bulletin. Residents were encouraged to balance heat precautions with attention to the evolving precipitation threats.

The National Center for Meteorology maintains a color-coded early warning platform that allows real-time tracking of alerts by region and severity level. Data published on the platform on August 27 showed multiple overlapping warnings spanning from light rain to the highest red category across more than a dozen governorates. The system has proven instrumental in coordinating responses between meteorological staff and civil defence teams during recurrent weather episodes. Updates are disseminated through official channels to ensure timely public awareness as new cells develop.
