Nelly Almaktoum developed Aykah, an Internet of Things prototype that monitors waste bin levels with ultrasonic sensors linked to Raspberry Pi and Arduino components, according to details released with the UN award. The system activates LED indicators to alert collection services while incorporating air filtration to control odors and bilingual instructions for users alongside solar power operation. Almaktoum’s invention secured recognition from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification for its practical approach to environmental issues in arid urban settings.
Almaktoum surveyed 222 residents in Jeddah to establish the need for improved waste infrastructure before finalizing her design, she explained. The project reflects targeted problem-solving rooted in local observations of overflowing bins and related hygiene concerns. She selected the name Aykah to represent her focus on accessible technology-driven solutions.
Following her father’s death, Almaktoum’s mother emphasized the importance of determination and continuous learning, she recalled. This foundation guided the teenager as she explored computing while addressing community environmental needs. Almaktoum enrolled in computing and information technology studies at King Abdulaziz University to build relevant expertise.
Her research increasingly centers on artificial intelligence applications for sustainability, with the waste prototype marking an initial step in that direction, Almaktoum stated. The effort stemmed purely from a wish to resolve a tangible local difficulty rather than commercial considerations. “I built it so I can actually solve a real problem,” she said.
Almaktoum overcame imposter syndrome and early setbacks when seeking guidance by relying on persistence and disciplined inquiry, she noted. Those obstacles eventually led to constructive feedback that strengthened the final prototype. The experience underscored the value of curiosity in driving innovation despite initial doubts.
Saudi Arabia generates substantial volumes of municipal solid waste each year, according to Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture assessments, underscoring the relevance of youth-driven technologies. Almaktoum’s award aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 priorities to boost recycling participation and integrate smart systems into daily infrastructure. UNCCD programs have spotlighted similar contributions by young inventors to reduce land impacts from unmanaged waste in dry climates.
Saudi youth have produced multiple sustainability projects in recent competitions, including AI applications for waste mitigation recognized at the 2025 EmpowerME Hackathon organized by INJAZ Al-Arab and partners, a related press release indicated. Such initiatives advance UN Sustainable Development Goals on sustainable cities and responsible consumption across the region. Almaktoum continues refining her prototype with plans to expand its deployment in additional Saudi communities.
