The Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud issued a directive to name a forthcoming mosque north of Riyadh after King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud. The order came in response to a proposal submitted by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The agency added that the directive includes dedicating an 88,000-square-meter tract of land along King Abdulaziz Road for the mosque project.
Naming the mosque after the founder of the modern Saudi state serves to cement his national heritage and the pivotal role he played in unifying the Kingdom. It further acknowledges his personal commitment to the construction of mosques and Islamic centers throughout the country’s various provinces during his reign. The Saudi Press Agency stated that the step underscores these historic contributions.
The development forms part of broader initiatives to honor the Kingdom’s foundational history during National Day observances. Saudi Arabia marks National Day on September 23 each year to commemorate the 1932 unification under King Abdulaziz. The timing of the royal directive aligns with these commemorations, according to the agency.
Similar royal directives have been issued in the past to name public spaces after historical Saudi leaders. An earlier order led to the naming of 15 squares in Riyadh after imams and kings from the first and second Saudi states as well as modern monarchs, the Saudi Press Agency reported in February. These steps reflect a continued emphasis on preserving and promoting national identity through public nomenclature.
The designated location on King Abdulaziz Road, one of Riyadh’s major thoroughfares, ensures the mosque will occupy a prominent position in the northern expansion of the capital. No timeline for the start of construction or design specifications has been announced by responsible authorities so far. The project is expected to add to the religious infrastructure serving residents in that district.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has driven multiple projects related to mosque development and historical preservation. One such endeavor is the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historical Mosques, which has focused on restoring traditional structures using original materials, earlier Saudi Press Agency dispatches have shown. This latest naming continues efforts to connect contemporary religious facilities with the nation’s unifying heritage.
