The Saudi Press Agency reported that Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil expressed the Kingdom’s support for the newly launched Global Alliance during his address at the United Nations. Alwasil underlined the alliance’s potential to improve integration, cut down on redundant efforts and honor individual country priorities in development planning. He connected this to Saudi Vision 2030, which shares focuses on economic diversification, digital transformation, innovation, sustainability, youth empowerment and private sector growth.

The permanent representative added that the Saudi Fund for Development has financed projects in over 100 developing countries in key sectors ranging from infrastructure to health. This record demonstrates the depth of the Kingdom’s involvement in South-South and triangular cooperation over decades. Alwasil concluded by stressing Saudi Arabia’s readiness to collaborate further with UN member states and partners toward achieving inclusive and sustainable progress globally.

The United Nations designates September 12 as the annual Day for South-South Cooperation to promote knowledge exchange among developing nations. An announcement from the UN Office for South-South Cooperation on X described the Global Alliance, launched on September 11, as a platform for proven solutions to travel, adapt and scale via partnerships. This development coincides with rising economic ties within the Global South.

Global trade between countries of the Global South hit 6.8 trillion dollars in 2025 and now accounts for more than half of developing nations’ total exports. Foreign direct investment flows among developing economies have quadrupled since the 1990s and represented 32 percent of worldwide FDI in the early 2020s. These statistics, highlighted in a Qatari newspaper analysis, point to the momentum that the new alliance intends to harness for further advancement.

A UNDP press release from 2023 outlined Saudi Arabia’s historical support for the Buenos Aires Plan of Action and its provision of substantial development financing. The release noted over 40 billion dollars committed since 2012 to uplift partner nations in the Global South. Such longstanding contributions align with the current push for strengthened multilateral frameworks like the Global Alliance.

Recent data indicates Saudi Arabia provided 5.2 billion dollars in official development assistance in 2023, much of it targeting infrastructure in least developed countries. Arab News reported that GCC countries overall have ramped up investments in Africa and other regions as part of South-South strategies. Alwasil’s statement at the UN event reinforces the Kingdom’s role as a bridge in these collaborative efforts.
