The Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday welcoming the integration of Syrian Democratic Forces into the military institutions of the Syrian Arab Republic. According to the ministry the agreement contributes to achieving security and stability for Syria and its people. The ministry said in the statement “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s welcome of the integration of SDF forces into the military institutions of the brotherly Syrian Arab Republic in a way that achieves security and stability for Syria and its brotherly people.” The statement reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s support for steps taken by the Syrian government to fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Saudi Arabia renewed its backing for the Syrian government’s path toward unity and development in the same statement from the Foreign Ministry. The Kingdom expressed wishes for Syria and its people to enjoy security peace and prosperity. This position follows the ministry’s welcome just one day earlier of the United States decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism according to a separate Saudi Gazette report on that announcement.

Al Arabiya English reported that SDF Chief Mazloum Abdi announced on Tuesday the dissolution of the Kurdish-led group as an independent military force. The group was founded in 2015 to fight ISIS according to the outlet. It clashed repeatedly with Syria’s armed forces following the ouster of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 Arab News noted in its coverage of the integration announcement.

The integration agreement builds on a prior ceasefire and integration framework reached between the Syrian government and the SDF in January. Anadolu Agency reported that the earlier deal provided for gradual incorporation of the group into state institutions. The Saudi Foreign Ministry statement underscores continued Saudi support for such measures that consolidate Syrian stability and institutional rebuilding.

Arab News reported that the move is viewed as helping to achieve security and stability across Syrian territory under the central government. The Foreign Ministry’s announcement was shared via its official channels including on X by the ministry’s verified account. Multiple regional outlets carried the statement simultaneously highlighting its alignment with broader Gulf engagement on Syrian affairs following the political transitions of the past year.

The SDF integration forms part of ongoing efforts to unify military structures in Syria after years of fragmented control. Saudi Arabia has expressed similar supportive positions in recent statements on Syrian developments including reconstruction and counterterrorism measures. The ministry’s latest comments reflect a consistent diplomatic approach aimed at backing Syrian-led initiatives for lasting peace in the country.
