The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the kingdom’s strongest condemnation of the attack in a statement carried by the Syrian Arab News Agency. It affirmed full solidarity with Syria and backing for measures the Syrian government is taking against all forms of extremism and terrorism. The ministry wished Syria and its people security and peace while calling for the speedy recovery of the injured.

An explosive device struck the bus on the Marouneh-al-Tal road in Rif Dimashq Governorate on Saturday, SANA reported earlier that day. The blast left a number of Internal Security Forces members injured as they traveled the route in the Damascus countryside. Syrian authorities said they had begun investigating the incident and working to apprehend those behind it.

This latest assault comes against a backdrop of heightened security alerts in the Syrian capital region. A Security Council Report published in August 2026 noted that ISIL attacks in Damascus the previous month indicated a resurging threat in urban areas. Syrian officials arrested an Islamic State-linked cell in raids across Damascus and its suburbs following July bombings that killed and wounded dozens, according to Al Jazeera.

The July 7 explosions near a hotel in Damascus injured 18 people during a visit by the French president, state media indicated. Preliminary investigations linked those attacks to ISIL, prompting coordinated security operations in areas such as al-Qutayfah, Sayyidah Zaynab, Qudsaya and Ash al-Warwar. The interior ministry credited the raids with dismantling the network responsible.

Jordan similarly condemned the bus attack, expressing solidarity with Damascus in a separate statement, Anadolu Agency reported. The twin responses from Riyadh and Amman reflect broader regional support for Syrian efforts to stabilize the country during its transitional phase. Multiple Arab states have voiced concerns over terrorism’s potential to undermine recent progress toward security.

The attack fits a pattern of incidents that have tested Syrian security forces since the political transition began in late 2024. A CFR Global Conflict Tracker update from August 2026 described the interim administration as navigating intercommunal tensions, terrorism and external factors. Syrian and Iraqi leaders held discussions on regional security cooperation earlier in the month, the tracker noted.
