The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing the kingdom’s strongest condemnation and rejection of the attack that targeted the Syrian capital. “The Foreign Ministry expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s condemnation and rejection in the strongest terms of the cowardly terrorist attack on the Syrian capital Damascus that led to the injury of a number of security staff and civilians,” the statement read, according to Al Arabiya. It stressed Saudi Arabia’s firm rejection of all terrorist and extremist acts aimed at undermining the security and stability of Syria and its people.
The ministry extended sincere sympathy to the families of those injured as well as to the Syrian government and people while wishing the country continued security, safety and stability, the statement continued. This position builds on Saudi Arabia’s longstanding support for Syria amid its political transition. The statement was released on the same day as the incident.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, two explosive devices detonated as specialized security units attempted to dismantle them after they were discovered planted by a terrorist cell. The blasts occurred near the Ministry of Tourism close to the Four Seasons Hotel where Macron was staying during his official visit. Syrian authorities reported that 18 individuals were injured, including four police officers.
A CNN report indicated that Macron’s visit marks the first by a European head of state to Damascus since the fall of the Assad regime late last year. The French president remained unharmed and continued with his scheduled meetings including with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The trip is focused on strengthening diplomatic relations and discussing potential support for Syria’s reconstruction efforts.
The Saudi condemnation follows a similar statement issued by the kingdom earlier in the week after a separate café bombing in Damascus, which the Saudi Press Agency carried on July 4. That prior attack also drew expressions of solidarity with Syria against all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism. Saudi Arabia has voiced consistent backing for the Syrian people during the country’s ongoing transition period.
The GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi strongly condemned the blasts as well, an Al Arabiya post noted. Several other regional states including the UAE and Jordan issued parallel denunciations reaffirming their support for Syrian stability. These responses reflect a broader regional stance against efforts to destabilize Syria at a sensitive time.
