The Saudi Press Agency announced that the kingdom will experience one of the longest total solar eclipses of the 21st century on August 2, 2027. The path of totality will cross large parts of western and southern Saudi Arabia, giving residents and visitors in those regions a prime vantage point for the event. This alignment positions the country prominently on the global map for astronomical monitoring and documentation.

In Abha, the agency reported, complete darkness during totality is expected to last approximately six minutes. Jeddah and segments of the western coast will experience around five minutes and 50 seconds of totality. These extended periods will allow researchers an uncommon chance to examine the sun’s corona in detail.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that central, eastern and northern regions will instead see a partial solar eclipse. In some locations the sun’s disk could be obscured by as much as 80 percent, though the precise percentage, start time and duration will depend on each site’s exact coordinates. The agency added that the eclipse’s longest totality overall will take place in neighboring Egypt.

Astronomical data compiled by NASA confirms that total solar eclipses at any specific earthly location occur infrequently, often with gaps spanning generations. The more than 75-year lapse since the last such event visible from Saudi Arabia matches established patterns for the phenomenon. Scientists anticipate that the 2027 eclipse will support further advances in solar physics research.

The Saudi Press Agency stressed the importance of observing strict safety measures throughout the event. Viewers must never look directly at the sun without certified eclipse glasses or appropriately filtered telescopes and binoculars. Failure to follow these precautions can result in permanent damage to eyesight.

Local astronomy groups and educational bodies are expected to organize supervised viewing opportunities in major cities along the path. These efforts typically involve providing approved safety equipment and background information on the eclipse mechanics. The occasion is viewed as a platform to promote broader public interest in scientific observation across the kingdom.
