The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Prince Faisal bin Farhan emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions during his discussions with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Dr. Badr Abdelatty. The calls focused on preserving the security and stability of the region through continued coordination. Such engagements form part of Riyadh’s broader diplomatic initiative to mitigate tensions that have affected key waterways.

Earlier this week the minister held similar discussions with officials from Jordan and Greece, the ministry reported. These successive calls demonstrate a sustained push to align positions among regional and international partners. The consistent focus on freedom of navigation underscores the priority placed on economic stability.

Disruptions in the Red Sea have substantially impacted global trade routes, according to a Hermes Investment report. Container shipments through the area have fallen 75 percent, forcing vessels to take longer routes around Africa that extend travel times by up to two weeks. The resulting delays have contributed to higher costs across supply chains.

A Centre for Economic Policy Research assessment found that extended disruptions could lower global trade volumes by 1.3 percentage points in the current year with additional effects in following years. The euro area might experience export growth reductions of up to 1.6 percentage points under a protracted scenario. These projections illustrate the high stakes for international commerce and the importance of the diplomatic efforts.

The ministry’s statement indicated that Egypt’s strategic position at the Suez Canal and Qatar’s influence within the Gulf make the involvement of both countries particularly relevant to the discussions. The ministers reviewed ongoing regional developments that have heightened concerns over maritime safety. Coordinated responses among partners are seen as essential to preventing further escalation.

In addition, the calls addressed ways of advancing diplomatic initiatives to tackle conflicts fueling the current instability, the ministry reported. Saudi Arabia has maintained an active role in mediating regional disputes through such engagements. The outreach to Doha and Cairo highlights the kingdom’s emphasis on collaborative solutions to common security threats.
