The Saudi team of 12 students, comprising both male and female participants, arrived in South Korea for the three-day competition that runs through August 14, according to the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity. A Mawhiba statement outlined that the students were chosen following a rigorous national selection process designed to identify talent in standards, metrology and quality sciences. The foundation has partnered with the Ministry of Education and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization to deliver targeted preparation that equips competitors with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Mawhiba’s qualifying program for the Olympiad included registration between February and April 2026, followed by online workshops, e-tests, offline training camps and advanced modules running through July, the foundation’s published schedule shows. Students from grades seven to 12 who had excelled in the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity formed the primary pool for this pathway. The multi-stage preparation ensures Saudi representatives can engage effectively with peers from more than 40 countries at the event hosted in Goyang.

Saudi Arabia made its debut in the International Standards Olympiad in 2024 and secured five awards including one gold, two silver, one bronze and one honorary mention, according to Mawhiba records. The foundation noted that these early results demonstrated the potential of its gifted youth development initiatives in this specialized field. Subsequent years have seen the national team build on that foundation through consistent participation and expanding training resources.

The Olympiad seeks to heighten awareness of international standards, metrology and quality assurance among student participants while promoting the exchange of ideas on emerging technologies, event organizers have stated. Competitors tackle challenges that blend scientific principles with creative problem-solving applied to real-world standardization scenarios. Saudi involvement forms part of a national strategy to strengthen STEM competencies and global competitiveness among young Saudis.

A Mawhiba report issued earlier in 2026 placed the total number of Saudi students winning international awards across all fields at 107 during the previous year, with more than 582,000 competing at the national level. The foundation’s data further indicates that programs feeding into events such as the Standards Olympiad have grown steadily since their introduction. Coordination among Mawhiba, the education ministry and the standards organization has been central to scaling these efforts.

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization supplied technical content for the training curriculum, focusing on global best practices in measurement science and regulatory frameworks, according to the collaborative announcement. Ministry of Education figures show rising enrollment in gifted programs that serve as feeders for international competitions. This integrated approach has enabled Saudi teams to achieve measurable progress in specialized scientific arenas on the world stage.
