The Saudi Press Agency reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of the US Central Command, along with an accompanying delegation in Jeddah on Monday. The two sides reviewed bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and the United States while examining the latest developments across the region. Minister of State, Cabinet Member and National Security Adviser Dr. Musaed bin Mohammed Al-Aiban attended the session.

Reuters reported that the meeting took place amid escalating hostilities with Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis, who have stepped up attacks on Saudi cities, energy infrastructure and shipping routes in the Red Sea. The agency added that bin Salman had recently sought additional military assistance from US President Donald Trump to counter the Houthis, though direct strikes were not approved in favor of intelligence-sharing and targeting support. This coordination builds on longstanding efforts to promote de-escalation and stability in the area.

The partnership between Saudi Arabia and the United States on defense matters stretches back more than eight decades, according to records from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A policy analysis by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy noted that the relationship encompasses extensive foreign military sales, joint training exercises and strategic alignment against common threats. Saudi Arabia maintains one of the largest defense budgets globally and ranks as a top customer for US arms transfers.

Recent US approvals for sales to the Kingdom include a package valued at $5 billion for precision bomb guidance kits and tank engines, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency indicated in early September notifications. Such transactions support capabilities in areas like air defense and ground operations that align with the topics likely covered in the Jeddah discussions. Cooper has previously participated in joint US-Saudi counter-drone exercises that tested integrated systems against aerial threats.

US Central Command releases have detailed how these drills, involving hundreds of personnel from both nations, focus on improving detection, tracking and neutralization of unmanned systems. A 2025 iteration at a Saudi range featured aircraft from US Apache and AC-130 units alongside Saudi F-15 and Typhoon fighters. The exercises reflect the practical defense collaboration that senior leaders continue to advance.

Bin Salman and Cooper’s engagement occurs against a backdrop of Saudi initiatives to bolster maritime security coalitions in the Red Sea, Asharq Al-Awsat reported in coverage of related diplomatic moves. These steps include agreements with partners like Turkey and Pakistan for joint defense measures. The latest meeting reinforces the priority both countries place on addressing regional challenges through sustained high-level dialogue.
