The Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen announced that Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by Houthi militias south of Makkah on the evening of September 15, 2026. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki stated that the interception occurred at 6:50 p.m. before the aircraft entered restricted airspace around the holy city. The coalition confirmed that the operation prevented any breach of the prohibited zone and reported no resulting damage or casualties from the incident.

Al-Maliki described the drone launch as the second Houthi attempt to target Makkah, after an earlier ballistic missile strike on July 27, 2017. He noted that the action endangered a city of profound religious importance to Muslims around the world while seeking to intimidate pilgrims, citizens and residents. The spokesman characterized the move as a terrorist act that would leave a lasting mark on the Houthis’ record of violations.

In his statement, Al-Maliki declared that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and pilgrims constitutes a red line for the coalition. “The security of the Two Holy Mosques and the guests of the Most Merciful is a red line,” Al-Maliki said. He added that the Joint Forces Command will not hesitate to take all necessary and deterrent measures against the Houthi militia’s terrorist aggression and hostile behavior.

The coalition has maintained this defensive posture since its intervention in the Yemen conflict in March 2015, a development documented in repeated reporting by Reuters. Saudi air defenses have intercepted numerous Houthi drones and missiles over the subsequent years, according to coalition statements compiled by Al Arabiya English across multiple incidents in 2019, 2021 and 2022. These operations have primarily focused on southern Saudi regions but have also addressed threats directed toward central areas.

Makkah serves as the focal point of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which attracts millions of visitors from across the globe each year. The city’s unique religious status as the birthplace of Islam amplifies the significance of any attempted attack, a point underscored in the coalition’s September 16 statement. Similar condemnation followed the 2017 missile attempt, which drew statements from Islamic leaders and international observers at the time.

Al-Maliki issued the details via a post on X that was subsequently carried by outlets including CNN Arabic and The Times of Israel. The coalition’s account framed the interception as part of its broader mandate to protect civilians and sacred sites amid ongoing Houthi activities. No additional details on the drone’s point of origin within Yemen were provided in the official statement.
