The Inside the Haramain account announced that Sheikh Ibrahim bin Adel Al-Madani, one of the principal muezzins at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, died early on September 21, 2026. His final duty had been delivering the first Fajr call to prayer that morning, and the account shared footage of the moment shortly before confirming his passing. Funeral prayers for Al-Madani will be held after the Asr prayer at the Grand Mosque on the same day, after which he will be buried at Al-Mualla Cemetery. Reports from outlets covering the Two Holy Mosques indicated that tributes began pouring in immediately across social media.

Al-Madani was one of 24 main muezzins at the mosque, where six take turns daily to deliver the calls for the five prayers along with the initial dawn adhan, according to Gulf News. He gained recognition for his voice during the Fajr prayer, his performance of the takbeers and his additional responsibility of tabligh, which involves relaying the imam’s words from the dedicated platform to reach worshippers throughout the vast space. The announcement triggered widespread sharing of his recordings, with users highlighting how his calls had become a familiar part of daily worship at Islam’s holiest site.

Born in Madinah in 1975, Al-Madani was raised in a religious family where his grandfather, a memorizer of the Quran, served as a major influence on his path, Khaleej Times reported. He began calling the adhan at age 15 in a neighborhood mosque back home and balanced the role with his studies in Quranic sciences before a period away for teaching commitments. In 1439 AH, corresponding to 2017-2018, he received the appointment to serve at the Grand Mosque, marking the start of nearly a decade in the position.

During a prior appearance on the Ashraqt podcast, Al-Madani recounted the overwhelming emotion of his first adhan inside the Grand Mosque. “I cried when I saw the tawaf around the Kaaba as they listened to my voice,” he said. “Who am I that my voice rises in this pure place?” Clips from that interview circulated widely on Monday alongside his adhan recordings as followers paid tribute to his humility and service.

Al Jazeera Net noted that Al-Madani was among those whose voices had become intertwined with the auditory landscape of the Grand Mosque, where muezzins maintain a rotation system rooted in long-standing traditions of the call to prayer. The death prompted a trending hashtag in Arabic that amplified videos of his takbeers during Eid prayers and routine worship. Accounts linked to the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques were among the first to disseminate the news, though no separate formal statement had been issued by late Monday.

The role of muezzin at the Grand Mosque carries significant prestige, with historical precedents for organized rotations of qualified reciters that echo practices documented at the Prophet’s Mosque over centuries. Al-Madani’s tenure added to that legacy through his consistent presence during key prayer times, particularly the emotionally charged dawn hours when the mosque fills with worshippers preparing for the day. His passing at a relatively young age has drawn reflections on the continuity of such sacred duties amid the constant flow of pilgrims and residents in Makkah.
