The International Monetary Fund’s October 2026 World Economic Outlook report upgraded the Kingdom’s projected growth for 2027 by 2.4 percentage points from the 5.5 percent forecast issued in July. At the same time the fund revised its outlook for 2026 to a contraction of 3.3 percent compared with the 1.7 percent expansion anticipated three months earlier. These changes incorporate updated assumptions regarding the duration of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their effects on energy production and trade routes.

According to the report Saudi Arabia remains somewhat less affected than several neighboring economies owing to its diversified energy export infrastructure. The assessment noted that the Kingdom has been able to redirect shipments through the Red Sea and East-West pipeline limiting the impact of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. This resilience underpins the sharper rebound projected for next year as conditions normalize.

The IMF document assumes under its baseline scenario that the Strait of Hormuz will start reopening to shipping in March 2027 with a return to pre-conflict operations by October. Such developments would support renewed energy production exports and logistics activity across the region. The report also forecasts strong recoveries for other Gulf states including 18.8 percent growth in Qatar and 17.1 percent in Kuwait for 2027.

Inflation in Saudi Arabia is set to moderate to 1.9 percent in 2026 from 2 percent in 2025 before rising modestly to 2.2 percent the following year according to the fund’s projections. The broader Middle East and Central Asia region is expected to contract by 0.3 percent in 2026 before expanding 6.3 percent in 2027. These regional figures reflect a material shift from the IMF’s April estimates driven by evolving conflict dynamics.

A World Bank report released earlier this month presented a comparable outlook with Saudi Arabia contracting 2 percent in 2026 before growing 7.9 percent in 2027. The Saudi Ministry of Finance anticipates even higher expansion of 12.8 percent for 2027 in its recent pre-budget statement. The IMF analysis attributed the relatively contained 2026 downturn to the Kingdom’s ability to maintain alternative export pathways.

The recovery trajectory will hinge on the restoration of normal trade and energy flows through key maritime routes the report indicated. Regional forecasts remain sensitive to any prolongation of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz or related infrastructure damage. The IMF will continue monitoring these factors for potential further revisions in subsequent updates.
