Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki announced that Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi militia toward the area north of Riyadh early on Wednesday. Al-Maliki said coalition intelligence systems tracked the launch platform in Sanaa and destroyed it while the site was being prepared for an imminent attack against the Kingdom. The spokesman added that the action formed part of sustained operations to neutralize cross-border threats from Houthi-controlled territory.

According to Al-Maliki, the destroyed platform had been used in the latest attack attempt and its elimination occurred in real time as preparations were underway. He noted that Houthi-held Sanaa along with the governorates of Saada and Amran remain the primary origins of such missile threats. Al-Maliki stated the coalition would continue targeting launch infrastructure to reduce risks to Saudi population centers.

Al-Maliki reported in the same announcement carried by Asharq Al-Awsat that a separate ballistic missile aimed at Khamis Mushait was also intercepted and destroyed. The coalition has maintained that its responses adhere to international humanitarian law while supporting Yemen’s recognized government against the Iran-backed group. Previous coalition briefings have documented dozens of similar interceptions over recent years.

A post by Al-Maliki on X, referenced across multiple regional outlets including Al Arabiya English, confirmed the platform’s destruction prevented further immediate launches from the same site. Coalition intelligence placed the platform directly under Sanaa airspace at the time of the strike. The development follows a pattern of escalated Houthi attempts that have targeted both civilian and infrastructure locations inside Saudi Arabia.

Al-Maliki emphasized that the attacks deliberately endangered civilians in a city of more than 8 million residents, echoing language from coalition statements after prior incidents. Saudi air defense systems have recorded high success rates against ballistic threats since the conflict intensified, according to aggregated data from the Saudi Ministry of Defense. The latest operation reflects ongoing coordination among coalition partners to degrade the militia’s offensive capabilities.

The coalition continues to monitor Houthi movements and reserves the right to respond proportionally, Al-Maliki noted in his remarks. Yemen’s civil war, which drew in the Saudi-led intervention in 2015, has seen periodic spikes in cross-border fire that have prompted repeated defensive actions. Official tallies from the coalition place the number of neutralized projectiles in the hundreds since operations began.
