The Saudi Energy Efficiency Center operates under the Ministry of Energy and has led national programs to rationalize consumption since its establishment in 2010. According to the Saudi Green Initiative, enhancing energy efficiency supports the target of reducing carbon emissions by 278 million tonnes per annum by 2030 while advancing Saudi Vision 2030 sustainability goals. The center collaborates with public institutions to deploy best practices in energy management and auditing.
An energy audit of the university’s faculty of engineering buildings, published in the Evergreen journal by researchers including Yahya Ahmed Alashwal, documented a reduction in energy use intensity from 134.92 kilowatt hours per square meter in 2018 to 90.48 in 2022. The study identified air conditioning systems as accounting for over 90 percent of electricity use in those structures, with optimized temperature and humidity controls offering potential savings of approximately 15 megawatt hours monthly. Such findings have guided further efficiency improvements across the wider campus.
