The Red Sea Film Foundation confirmed the sixth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival will not take place this year after a full assessment of timing and operational needs for an event of its scope. The gathering had been set for December 3 to 12 in the Historic Al-Balad district of Jeddah. Organizers stated the shift allows proper preparation to maintain the quality audiences have come to expect from the festival.

The foundation said in a statement that the decision reflects its commitment to ensuring the Festival takes place at the right time and under the right conditions to deliver the experience for which the Red Sea International Film Festival has become known. It added that the 2027 edition will feature a renewed vision and a programme that continues to celebrate cinema and filmmakers from Saudi Arabia, the region and around the world. The event was originally scheduled following an announcement earlier this year that set the December 2026 window.

Year-round activities managed by the foundation will continue without pause while the flagship festival is on hold until 2027. The Red Sea Fund and Red Sea Labs will keep supporting filmmakers and projects across the calendar. Starting in November 2026, new programming is scheduled to begin at Culture Square in Historic Jeddah, creating an ongoing venue for screenings, cultural events and specialized industry sessions.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the festival has gone from strength to strength in recent years, directing substantial resources toward attracting Hollywood names to Jeddah along with its development initiatives. Those programs have helped establish the gathering as a significant platform since its launch in 2021, shortly after Saudi Arabia ended its long-standing cinema ban. Industry coverage across outlets including Variety and Deadline has tracked the event’s expansion into a key fixture on the regional calendar.

The announcement arrives as the broader region contends with military tensions and security incidents, though the foundation attributed its choice exclusively to logistical and strategic factors. Screen Daily reported that Houthi militants have conducted drone and missile strikes on Saudi targets in recent months, yet the official release made no reference to these conditions. Multiple publications observed that the delay follows a period of uncertainty about whether the 2026 edition would proceed as planned.

The foundation has indicated that elements such as the Red Sea Souk industry market will form part of future editions once the new dates are confirmed for the fourth quarter of 2027. Prior editions have included high-profile premieres, networking sessions and talent labs that supported emerging voices from the Arab world and beyond. Further specifics on the revised schedule and programming slate are expected to be released in coming months.
