The forum serves as the central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. A Saudi delegation is expected to engage in discussions on progress toward the goals and share national experiences in implementation.
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organizes the High-Level Political Forum each year under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. This year’s session runs from July 6 to 15, 2026 and focuses on reviewing several specific goals including quality education, clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities, responsible consumption and climate action. According to UN figures the forum typically draws representatives from more than 100 countries along with civil society and private sector participants.
Saudi Arabia has submitted voluntary national reviews to the forum in previous years detailing advances across multiple Sustainable Development Goals. A 2025 report from the World Bank noted that the Kingdom had made notable strides in renewable energy adoption as part of its Vision 2030 reform program with solar and wind capacity expanding rapidly over the past five years. The Saudi Press Agency statement indicated the delegation would highlight these domestic efforts during the 2026 meetings.
Participation in the forum aligns with broader Gulf Cooperation Council initiatives on sustainability according to data published by the GCC Secretariat. Several member states including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have also confirmed attendance at the 2026 session to exchange best practices on environmental protection and economic diversification. The Saudi delegation will include officials from relevant ministries involved in national planning and environmental affairs.
The High-Level Political Forum concludes with an ministerial declaration that summarizes collective commitments and identified challenges.
