The announcement from the Riyadh-based Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology detailed how its specialists worked with Telegram teams to identify and eliminate content that violated policies on violent extremism. This latest six-month period builds directly on years of coordinated monitoring that has scaled its reach across the messaging service. The center has maintained that such partnerships remain essential to disrupting online ecosystems used by extremists for propaganda and recruitment.

Since the partnership launched in February 2022 the two organizations have together removed a total of 292.6 million pieces of extremist material and closed 20,360 channels according to the latest update from the center. That cumulative achievement reflects steady growth in operational effectiveness with the 2025 full-year results alone accounting for 97.6 million items removed and 4,294 channels closed as stated in an earlier Saudi Press Agency release. The center has described the collaboration as a model for international efforts to counter digital extremism through direct platform engagement.

Etidal established as a global hub for countering extremist narratives focuses on proactive detection using both human analysts and technological tools to scan for prohibited content. The center’s work with Telegram includes rapid response protocols that allow for content to be taken down before it reaches wider audiences on the app’s channels and groups. Data from the center shows that many of the targeted channels were dedicated to promoting terrorist organizations or inciting violence.

The first-half 2026 operation addressed materials across multiple languages and regions though the center did not provide a breakdown by specific category in its latest release. Cooperation has expanded since the initial memorandum of understanding with both sides committing resources to training and intelligence sharing on emerging threats. Similar partnerships with other technology companies have formed part of Saudi authorities’ broader strategy against online radicalization according to periodic Etidal summaries.

A January 2026 statement from the center on the preceding year’s results underscored the sustained nature of the initiative which began with an agreement in early 2022. Counterterrorism monitoring cited in Global Center reports has noted how extremists increasingly favor encrypted platforms like Telegram necessitating constant vigilance and swift enforcement. The Etidal-Telegram effort stands among the longer-running examples of public-private cooperation in this area.

The cumulative channel closures since 2022 have reduced the availability of dedicated spaces for extremist discourse on the platform according to assessments in the center’s periodic updates. By June 30 2026 the partnership had achieved what Etidal characterized as a substantial reduction in the visibility of such materials to potential recruits. Further statistics on the types of content most frequently removed are expected in future center reports.
