The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced the completion of main works on the Al-Thumamah Road bridge, which opened to vehicles Friday morning following an intensive construction period. Construction started on April 1, 2026, after removal of the previous bridge at the heavily trafficked site adjacent to Riyadh Metro columns. The commission reported that the project required precise lifting and installation of structural elements with a total weight exceeding 3,200 tons above Prince Mohammed bin Salman Road while traffic continued to flow around the work zone.

The commission’s statement detailed that all works were completed with a safety record free of any injuries or incidents while measures ensured minimal disruption to road users throughout the build. The new bridge stretches approximately 400 meters in length and 20 meters in width according to the commission’s specifications. It includes six main lanes with three in each direction plus four service lanes with two in each direction.

According to the commission, the bridge enhances east-west traffic flow along the Al-Thumamah Road axis and improves access to the King Abdullah Financial District as well as major road networks and surrounding residential and commercial areas. The added service lanes separate through traffic from local movements, reducing conflicts at the intersection and increasing overall mobility efficiency. The commission noted that the structure strengthens connectivity across the city’s road network.

The commission placed this bridge within the larger redevelopment of the 24-kilometer Thumamah Road corridor that extends from Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah Road in the east to King Khalid Road in the west. That corridor upgrade encompasses 17 bridges, 10 tunnels and three intersections in total as part of the authority’s program. Earlier commission updates indicated the full axis development targets capacity for more than 200,000 vehicles per day on key segments.

Faris Al-Hazani, director of projects at the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, said completing the bridge in six months resulted from precise planning, parallel work streams, ongoing coordination between all parties and swift decision-making. The commission framed the project as one element of the wider Ring Roads and Main Roads Development Program that aims to enhance more than 500 kilometers of roadways across the Saudi capital. Such infrastructure initiatives support Riyadh’s ongoing urban growth and transport demands.
