The King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority obtained the accreditation from the Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation after the body completed comprehensive assessments and site surveys of the routes. These reviews verified that each trail satisfies globally recognized criteria for safety, construction and environmental integration. The process establishes the reserve as the first protected area in Saudi Arabia to achieve this level of certification for hiking infrastructure.

“The King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority has obtained international accreditation for 10 hiking trails, making them the first accredited trails in the Kingdom and adding a new achievement to the Kingdom’s record in adventure sports and ecotourism,” the authority said. “The hiking trails have been developed to international standards, offering unprecedented natural experiences at the heart of the royal reserve,” it added. The certification is intended to assure visitors of consistent quality and risk management across the designated paths.

The Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation evaluated the trails against benchmarks employed by comparable international organizations involved in mountain sports and outdoor recreation. Federation assessors examined factors including trail marking, erosion control, emergency access points and interpretive signage at key locations. Their approval confirms that the routes now align with practices observed in established hiking destinations worldwide.

Saudi Arabia has expanded its network of protected natural areas in recent years as part of broader economic diversification strategies, according to successive reports from the Ministry of Tourism. The King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve ranks among the largest such designations, encompassing diverse desert, mountain and wetland ecosystems across northern provinces. Data from the General Authority for Statistics show steady increases in domestic nature-based leisure visits since the reserve opened to limited public access.

The accreditation coincides with national targets that seek to elevate outdoor and sustainable tourism offerings, a priority outlined in official Vision 2030 progress updates issued by the Royal Commission for the Development of Diriyah. Similar trail development programs have been launched in other reserves, though none have yet secured equivalent international validation. Reserve managers plan to integrate the certified paths into guided visitor programs while continuing to monitor ecological impacts.

Authority records indicate that infrastructure improvements within the reserve have included new trailheads, rest areas and digital mapping resources to support the accredited routes. These additions build on earlier conservation initiatives that focused on habitat restoration and wildlife monitoring across the protected zone. The certified trails are expected to draw both local enthusiasts and international visitors interested in documented, standards-compliant hiking experiences.
