The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced the appointment of Rear Adm. Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri to command the coalition that seeks to strengthen joint maritime security among participating nations. Al-Shehri will directly oversee joint maritime defense operations along with associated planning and coordination both within the coalition and alongside other international partners. He will additionally direct the implementation of assigned missions while supporting the creation of a unified command and joint staff to integrate capabilities across members.
According to the ministry the new commander brings more than 32 years of distinguished service in the Royal Saudi Naval Forces. Previous roles held by Al-Shehri include heading the department for planning budget and force development as well as leading the Naval Oversight Office in Spain. He also contributed to the Sarawat Project involving the procurement of five vessels and participated in the executive steering committee overseeing Saudi-Spanish defense cooperation initiatives.
The ministry detailed Al-Shehri’s academic credentials which encompass a master’s degree in defense policy and international security from Complutense University of Madrid together with a master’s in human resources systems management from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He completed advanced military education programs in the United Kingdom Spain and France. Al-Shehri has been awarded multiple military decorations throughout his career in recognition of his contributions.
The coalition was unveiled on July 30 when representatives from 43 countries and the European Union attended an international meeting hosted by Saudi Arabia Reuters reported. Saudi Arabia is acting as the founding and leading state while providing the headquarters for the alliance. The grouping aims to safeguard freedom of navigation protect energy supply lines and secure global trade particularly across the Red Sea Bab al-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden according to the ministry.
A joint statement has already been signed by initial participants with several additional countries completing procedures to become founding members the ministry said. The coalition remains open to nations that share its vision and objectives with applications continuing to be received. A supplementary statement will address membership for further participating states once the primary signing phase concludes.
Planners from coalition members will convene on Aug. 12 and 13 to finalize operational arrangements and required signatures according to the ministry’s announcement. This meeting represents the next step in the alliance’s institutional development following last week’s launch. The appointment of Al-Shehri establishes the senior leadership needed to advance coordinated maritime defense activities.
