The Saudi Food and Drug Authority announced it has granted marketing authorization for two Saudi-developed artificial intelligence software products intended to assist medical professionals with dental and ophthalmic diagnoses. Dental IQ applies deep learning to dental radiographs to flag potential cases of caries, periodontal conditions and related tissue changes, thereby helping practitioners refine their diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies, according to the SFDA. SAARIA, in turn, screens retinal images to identify early signs of diabetic retinopathy among diabetes patients in routine clinical settings.

This pair of approvals signifies the first marketing authorizations issued by the SFDA to domestically created AI-enabled medical software in the domains of dentistry and ophthalmology. The authority described both solutions as clinical support instruments that augment rather than supplant physician decision-making. Developers conducted local clinical studies to demonstrate the tools’ reliability as part of the authorization process, the SFDA reported.

The software products originated from Saudi startups active in AI-driven health technologies that enrolled in the SFDA’s dedicated Innovative Medical Devices Pathway. That initiative supplies early regulatory advice and accelerates review for promising local innovations while ensuring all mandatory technical and clinical benchmarks are satisfied, the regulator said. Companies following this route have previously secured approvals for similar digital health applications.

In its assessment the SFDA examined comprehensive technical documentation alongside clinical evidence to validate each product’s safety, performance and suitability for its stated purpose. The process aligns with the authority’s guidance on digital health products that classifies and regulates software as a medical device according to international standards. Such frameworks have enabled Saudi Arabia to authorize multiple AI medical tools over the past year, SFDA records show.

Previous authorizations include a June 2026 clearance for an AI-powered smartphone application capable of estimating vital signs through facial video analysis, which the SFDA noted as a global first at the time. That application underwent testing in the authority’s regulatory sandbox before advancing through the innovative devices track. The latest approvals for Dental IQ and SAARIA continue this trajectory of supporting homegrown digital health solutions.

The SFDA noted that the milestone contributes to the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program under Saudi Vision 2030. SAARIA’s capability holds particular relevance as Statista data projects that 24.3 percent of Saudi adults will have diabetes in 2026. The startups benefited from structured guidance that helped them navigate requirements ranging from data integrity to clinical validation inside Saudi facilities.
