The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on July 31, 2026, condemning a drone attack on ships at Egypt’s Damietta port. According to the ministry, the Kingdom stands in full solidarity with Egypt and backs all measures Cairo has taken to safeguard its sovereignty and national security. The statement rejected any attacks on critical infrastructure or civilians in the strongest terms.

A drone struck a U.S.-owned floating storage and regasification unit at the Mediterranean port facility on July 29, maritime security firm Ambrey reported. The fire spread to a second gas vessel, yet Egypt’s petroleum ministry confirmed no injuries or fatalities resulted from the blaze. Egyptian authorities launched an investigation into the incident, with the cabinet stating that preliminary findings confirmed a drone as the cause and that security steps were underway.

The Saudi statement extended its denunciation to Iranian aggression against both Kuwait and Jordan. It noted an attack on a Kuwaiti facility that killed one worker, according to the ministry’s assessment of regional events. The ministry offered condolences to the victim’s family and to the governments of Kuwait and Jordan while calling for an immediate end to such actions.

Damietta functions as a primary hub for Egypt’s energy imports, including liquefied natural gas volumes that reached 8.92 million tons in 2025, Egyptian petroleum ministry figures show. The port maintained full operations after the fire was contained, port authorities stated. Reuters coverage placed the strike amid a sequence of Iranian missile activities targeting U.S. forces in Jordan and subsequent responses against Iran-backed groups in Iraq.

The ministry’s position forms part of coordinated regional diplomatic responses to recent escalations, Arab News reporting indicated. It stressed the necessity of halting Iranian attacks throughout the area to preserve stability. Investigations by Egyptian officials continue, with no group claiming responsibility for the Damietta strike.
